Why do I need to log in?
Students may request this formal process if they are dissatisfied with the outcome of the Dean's deliberations on their situation. A faculty member can also request a reconsideration of the Dean's decision concerning the alleged academic dishonesty if they are dissatisfied with the results. Note that most cases are resolved before the process advances to the formal level.
A student wishing to appeal the decision of a Dean must submit a completed application form to the Director of Student Success, along with a twenty-five dollar payment for provision of judiciary services (this fee is returned to the student if the appeal is upheld). The form includes information about the misconduct or dishonesty accusation and a rationale for why the student believes his or her case needs to proceed to the appeal. Once these steps are complete, the student meets with the Director of Student Success for an information gathering session.
Following the information meeting, the Director of Student Success determines whether or not the appeal may proceed to an appeal panel. The appeal process involves the assembly of an appeal panel, made of academic representative who are academically independent and unfamiliar with the case and therefore neutral in their assessments of the details of the case. Although there is variance with delegates involved with the assembled committees, each panel must have a Dean, who is not the Dean involved with the case; one non-academic administrator unrelated to the case, two College faculty members or staff, and two senior-level student representatives, who are appointed by the Students Administrative Council (for more details regarding the specific personnel constituents for each appeal panel, please see section 2.3.1 of the Discipline Appeal Panel in the Student Rights and Responsibilities and Discipline policy).
Prior to the panel’s convening, each member – including the student, faculty member or Dean involved with the case – must review a package of materials compiled by the Director of Student Services. The package includes relevant policies, any documentation regarding the incident, and the student’s application form with his or her rationale for interest in appeal.
When members of the appeal panel convene to hear the case, both the student and the faculty member or Dean involved with the case provide information on the incident.Following this process, panel members excuse the presenters to deliberate. The panel collectively determines a decision and informs the Director of Student Success who will contact the student and the Dean regarding the panel's decision.
